  • Factory 4: Factory 4s are stock production 4-cylinder cars. Factory 4s alternate race laps on both ovals, providing lots of thrills and chills for spectators when the cars criss-cross at race speed in front of the grandstands. Season Finale

The season finale at the asphalt track at Sandia Speedway turned out to be an exciting one with some great finishes capped off with the 100 lap Super Cuts Western States Championship race for the modifieds.

The Bandoleros were the first cars on the track and they were divided into 2 heat races. The first heat saw the 59 of CJ Wilson jump out to the early lead. Wilson never looked back as he led every lap for the win. The 32 of Joseph Redmond was second, and the 11 of Brooklyn Green was third.

The second heat race started with the 9 of Shelby Wilson jumping out to the lead with the 17 of Shane Skaggs giving chase. Skaggs made the pass for the lead with 5 laps to go, but Wilson took back the top spot on the next lap. Wilson held on for the win with the 88 of Joshua Jackson taking second and Shane Skaggs third.

The 59 of CJ Wilson took the lead in the main event and was able to hold off the field until the 9 of Shelby Wilson slipped past her son with 5 laps remaining. The battle for position behind her became intense but Shelby stayed out front and took home the win. CJ Wilson was second followed by Joshua Jackson in third, and Shane Skaggs fourth. Joshua Jackson won the points championship.

The Factory 4’s were next up as the 06 of Michelle Fowner took the lead in heat number one. Fowner slid into the infield on lap 2 which allowed the 77 of Fred Anaya to take over the lead. The 29 of Larry Johnson took over the top spot at the halfway point and cruised to victory. Anaya was second and the 32 of Jeff Smith was third.

The 14 of Andy Fowner took the early lead in the second heat race but the 84 of Eric Romero took the top spot on lap 3. Romero extended his lead and won by a comfortable margin. The 19 of Patricia Gallegos was second, and Andy Fowner was third.

The main event started with the 06 of Michele Fowner jumping out to the lead. An incident on the small track forced a restart, but Fowner regained her lead on the restart. A collision between Patricia Gallegos and Eric Romero sent Romero spinning on the small track which ended his afternoon. The restart saw a wild scramble for position as Larry Johnson took control with Patricia Gallegos moving up. Johnson and Gallegos battled side by side for a couple of laps and the battle continued going into the final lap. Gallegos went to the high side coming out of turn 4 and nipped Johnson at the finish line. Michelle Fowner was third, the 18 of David Dodge was fourth, and the 14 of Andy Fowner rounded out the top 5. Patricia Gallegos won the points championship.

The Legends had a nice field of 14 cars with the 17 of Dustin Tilbury taking the lead in the first heat race. The 7 of Matthew Cardenas took over the lead with 4 laps remaining, but Tilbury took it back on the next lap. Tilbury was able to hold on for the win with Cardenas second, and the 36 of Zachary Powell third.

The 23 of Antonio Cardenas took the early lead in the second heat race, but the 37 of Joshua Jackson worked his way up to the lead with 5 laps to go. Jackson led the rest of the way for the win with the 11x of Dylan Cappello from Peoria, Arizona second, and Antonio Cardenas third.

The main events for the Legends are usually very intense and this one was no exception. The 8 of Bryan Grandin took the early lead and was looking strong until a caution came out with 20 laps to go. The restart saw the 37 of Joshua Jackson taking the lead with Grandin getting shuffled back.  A short time later the 27 spun in turn 2 and the 17 of Dustin Tilbury went off the track and ended up flipping. Tilbury walked away unharmed but the car was finished. Jackson retained the lead on the restart, but engine problems caused him to drop back through the field. The 11x of Dylan Cappello took over the lead and held off the field to take the win. Matthew Cardenas was second, Antonio Cardenas was third, the 92 of Tyler Weldon was fourth, and Zachary Powell was fifth. Matthew Cardenas won the points championship.

The modifieds were the last division on the track and the 100 lap event got off to a shaky start. Pole sitter Matt Young spun going into turn one on the first lap forcing a complete restart. The 63 of Charlie Daniels took the lead on the restart, but a spin by the 76 of Robert Moharter brought out another caution on lap 2. The race finally settled down with Charlie Daniels leading the way. The 27 of Mike Hathaway worked his way through the field and took over the top spot several laps later. The #8 of Dan Alamaa suffered mechanical problems with a u-joint that ended his day 11 laps into the race.

Hathaway continued to lead as the 7 of Isaac Sherman moved up the second spot and gave chase. The 4 of Mario Truden Jr. went off the track on the back straightaway sending a huge cloud of dust in the air and bringing out a red flag. Truden was able to continue, but now he was a lap down. The 71 of Deral Meek Jr and the 14 of Vanessa Robinson were involved in an incident on lap 32 that left the 14 car with considerable sheet metal damage on the driver’s side. The rest of the first half of the race was incident free and at the 50 lap break it was Hathaway, Sherman, Daniels, and the 59 of Charlie Wilson.

The cars that changed tires at the break were sent to the end of line on their lap. The new lineup at the start of the second half was Sherman, Daniels, the 08 of Willis Johnson, and the 54 of Tim Hooper rounding out the top 4. Isaac Sherman led laps 51-72, but Mike Hathaway took back the lead with 32 to go. Hathaway started to pull away and then Willis Johnson who was running third, suffered engine problems with 12 laps remaining that brought out a yellow. Hathaway retained the lead on the restart and started to pull away. At this point some of the cars that decided against changing tires started to fade. Charlie Wilson moved up to second and the 15 of Russ Harvey climbed up to third. Hathaway extended his lead and took home the win. He was followed by Wilson, Harvey, Sherman, and Hooper rounding out the top 5.
